The Indianapolis Colts have found their next head coach and they didn’t give it to the fraud, Jeff Saturday. After weeks of thinking that owner Jim Irsay was just going to rock with Saturday, Irsay wised up on Super Bowl Sunday and found a real playcaller to run the Colts. Eagles offensive coordinator and playcaller Shane Steichen will become the next head coach of the Colts.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news:
“The Indianapolis Colts have targeted Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to be their next head coach and plan to hire him if the sides can reach agreement on a contract, sources told ESPN.
The Colts and Steichen cannot agree to a deal until after Super Bowl LVII on Sunday. The Colts want to meet this week to see whether they can complete a deal with Steichen, who now is their top target after Indianapolis informed other remaining candidates Sunday morning that they are out of the running.
The Colts began telling some head-coaching candidates Friday that they planned to go in another direction and then notified more candidates Sunday, leaving Steichen as the man they plan to hire.”
Steichen, 37, follows a recent trend the Colts have tried to follow in the past. The last time they hired a head coach it was also a former Eagles offensive coordinator in the form of Frank Reich. Given the success of the Eagles offense, Steichen is worthy of this opportunity.
The Eagles might get both of their coordinators ransacked this offseason. Jonathan Gannon is expected to interview for the Cardinals’ job right after the Super Bowl. If Philadelphia wins, Gannon could be the next to be given a head coaching job.
