After three seasons with the Chicago Bears, tight end Cole Kmet has gotten paid. Kmet signed a four-year extension worth $50 million, including $32.8 million guaranteed and $20 million in first-year cash, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.
Kmet comes off his best season with the Bears yet. He recorded a career-high seven touchdowns and averaged 10.9 yards per catch, Kmet is set for his best season yet this year. Not only was Kmet racking up touchdowns, but he became a lot better at actually securing the ball. Kmet hauled in 50 passes last season on 69 targets, his best catch percentage of his career.
As quarterback Justin Fields continues to develop more as time goes on, Kmet will become a better player. Through his first few seasons in the NFL, Fields has struggled in the throwing category, but has become a phenomenal runner. If Fields can take that next step in the passing stage, be on the lookout for Kmet.
But, as of right now, Kmet hasn’t fully impressed a lot of people, including Trey. Through two weeks last season, Kmet didn’t catch a single ball. In doing so, this puzzled many people, including Trey.
“We’re two weeks through the 2022 NFL Season and I have the same stats as Cole Kmet. Zero catches, Zero yards, Zero touchdowns,” he wrote. “Touchdowns? Sorry, that feels like the moon to Kmet at this point. I don’t even want to go there because now my expectations are simply too high and Trey knows better than that.“
Did the Bears overpay for Kmet with $50 million over the next four years? Will he live up to the expectations he once had at Notre Dame? Let us know in the comments down below.
