It has been announced that the Cleveland Baseball team is just that, in the interim, they will stay the Cleveland Baseball team. This means the Cleveland Baseball team are no more.
It was first reported by the New York Times.
This puts an end to all professional sports teams using Native American names, and imagery for logos.
While there have been many protests, the Cleveland team has kept the mascot the same for many years. However, it is now time for them to transition to a new team name in 2022.
This follows the Washington Redskins changing their team name to the Washington Football Team before this year’s NFL season.
There has been no official word on what the new mascot will be. They are expected to, later this week. But they hope to have new uniforms, a new name, and new logos by the 2022 season.
It should have been okay for them to keep the team name because they have had the nickname since 1915. That was 105 years ago. But, all good things must come to an end eventually. Under the name, they have won six American League pennants and Ten Central Division Titles.
However, the Cleveland Baseball Organization has been under a year-long process in which they decided to remove Chief Wahoo as their logo. But until we know for sure, we can call them the Cleveland Baseball Team and expect the Block C to be their logo.
How should Cleveland decide the new mascot? Should they let the fans choose? When should they bring in a new logo or team name? Could or should they return to their old name of the spiders? What are your thoughts?
