Chris Tanev is on the move to the Dallas Stars after seemingly endless speculation. They are paying a pretty penny for the pending UFA, but he is the best right-handed defenseman available. With this, not only are the Calgary Flames continuing their considerable firesale, but the trade season is now underway!
While the price was reportedly a first round pick, Jim Nill is not parting ways with that asset. Elliotte Friedman reported that a second-round pick, a prospect, and a conditional pick is headed the other way.
Awaiting full deal, but hearing Tanev trade to Dallas will involve a second-round pick, a young prospect and a conditional pick.

Friedman has tweeted that the prospect in question is 2021 second-round pick Artem Grushnikov. Call me crazy, but if they can win the Central, then Nill is my pick for GM of the Year. He has turned this team from middle-of-the-pack to a real threat to winning the Western Conference. Adding Matt Duchene for pennies is awesome. On top of his stellar draft record, another one of his gems is joining the show in Logan Stankoven. If he can find a way to get rid of the money attached to Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, he could be gunning for the best executive in the game. There is a lot of young studs on this roster and the balancing act between youth and veterans is crucial to success.
Between now and March 8th, both the Stars and the Calgary Flames will keep their phones on. Noah Hanifin is the next high-level defenseman that is seemingly on the way out of the C of Red. Meanwhile, Dallas owning their first-round pick is a big thing. They will more than likely be dipping into the forward market with a big piece now on their blue line.
The trade market is definitely one that consists more of quantity than quality. A competitive playoff race in both conferences also mean that some teams on the outside looking in may not be as willing to sell as in previous years (looking at you, Jake Guentzel). Regardless, you will want to keep your post notifications on over the next eight days.
One of the first big dominos just came off the board. Chris Tanev is staying in the West and moving from the Calgary Flames to the Dallas Stars.
PS: A third team is involved in this trade. The New Jersey Devils, rife with LTIR space, are absorbing 25% of Tanev’s expiring contract. The Stars are giving them a 2026 fourth-round pick for their trouble. It’s a deal that makes sense for all parties involved. Dallas gets even more deadline cap space for another deal, and Jersey gets something for their use-it-or-lose-it space. Furthermore, the conditions for the picks are revealed. Should the Stars reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2024, it will be a 2026 third-round pick sent to Calgary. If not, then it will only be a second-round pick and no additional draft compensation. Frank Seravalli has it all laid out below:
