If Chris Paul Leaves Phoenix, He Would Fit In Great On The Knicks

Chris Paul Would Look Pretty Nice In Orange And Blue

Say what you will about Chris Paul. He missed big shots when it mattered in the 2021 NBA Finals. Paul and the Phoenix Suns were 2 wins away from an NBA championship but let it slip through their fingers. However, let’s not get it twisted. The past few years have been a display of why CP3 is one of the greatest floor raisers of the past quarter-century. Let’s take the time machine back to 2017.

In his first year in Houston, Paul helped the Rockets earn the best record in the NBA. They took the fully loaded Golden State Warriors to the brink and were arguably a Paul injury away from winning a championship. After a regression in 2018-2019, Paul is seemingly banished to Oklahoma City. Instead of winding down and dancing in the lottery, he turned it up a notch. The Thunder made the 2020 playoffs behind his heroics and almost eliminated his former squad. His resurgence found him traded to the Phoenix Suns in the following offseason.

Not much good has ever come from the Phoenix Suns. They were pretty good in the 90s, but Michael Jordan put the kids to bed. They were okay in the 2000s, but Nash and D’Antoni were not enough to get to the promised land. Enter Chris Paul. He took a young squad and went from a decade-long postseason drought to an NBA Finals appearance. That is pretty damn impressive. After Giannis’ historic performance and the Bucks’ triumph in Game 6, there are already rumors about Paul’s future. Let me explain to you why the future hall-of-fame point guard is an incredible fit for the New York Knicks.

A Rose In The Garden

It’s safe to say Leon Rose is off to a good start in New York. The Knicks’ President of Basketball Operations has overseen the team’s drastic change in fortunes alongside coach of the year Tom Thibodeau. It just so happens that Rose used to be Paul’s agent with CAA Sports. They maintain a very good relationship and would more than likely have an interest in a reunion. He has helped Paul with a variety of trades and contracts throughout his 17-year career. The Point God considers Rose family, so why not have a little family reunion in Midtown Manhattan?

Made For MSG

The Knicks have needed a point guard forever. Derrick Rose has had an exciting renaissance in 2020-2021 but does not seem like a starter. There are few who play the position quite as well as CP3. He’s an all-time great passer, is lethal in the mid-range, and plays exceptional defense. More than anything, Paul will bring excitement to The Garden. The Knicks were a pleasant surprise last year. They played great defense and had some seriously impressive breakout players. However, they will be a well-oiled machine in 2021-2022. Young talents like R.J. Barrett and Mitchell Robinson would likely see improvements that are not too far off from Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton. Paul would also transition from one great coach to another. Monty Williams has earned his flowers for his performance in 2021. A Paul and Thibodeau combination would likely be incredible as well.

All You Gotta Do Is Pay Up

Paul is a pending free agent. We have seen the Knicks linked to stars like Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal this offseason. Both are incredible players but would cost a significant amount of assets. If Paul is interested in the Knicks, then all Rose needs to do is sign the contract. While a dynamic duo of CP3 and Julius Randle would be great as it is, there could be even more on the horizon. All of the assets they’ve collected, notably from the favoring aftermath of the Porzingis trade and 2019 offseason, would then be able to be packaged for a third star. Adding a Bradley Beal or Zach LaVine on top of Paul and Randle would simply add fuel to the fire. They might not have the star power of the Brooklyn Nets, but it would make New York basketball one of the biggest spectacles in all of sports. Nothing is set in stone in the NBA, so Leon Rose clearly has a couple of pathways for this offseason.
