Chris MacFarland Provided The Dumbest Explanation Ever As To Why The Avs Traded Mikko Rantanen

I still can’t believe the Avalanche traded Mikko Rantanen. I truly can’t believe it. If you read my trade grades post, you already know how I feel about it. Even if you originally understood it from the Avalanche side, the reasoning provided by Chris MacFarland as to why Colorado dealt Rantanen is maybe the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

Quotes found VIA ESPN and AP:

“It hurts, right. He’s a homegrown talent. He’s a superstar person. He’s a superstar human being,” he said. “I think that’s sports, right. We’re going to talk about it; people are going to talk about it. Your heart strings get tugged. That’s why we all do this.

“I’d be lying, I’m like that. He’s that good of a hockey player. … He had the UFA card, and we felt this is what we had to do.”

“You lose a superstar, and we’re going to have to try and replace him in the aggregate; 50-goal scorers don’t grow on trees,” MacFarland said. “You have to usually draft and develop them. Mikko was a home run for us for many, many years.”

Let’s cut the crap, MacFarland. You did this for one reason and one reason only. You didn’t want Rantanen to take more than Nathan MacKinnon even though he had every right to request a deal around what Leon Draisaitl just got. The cap is going way up and the superstar rate should adjust accordingly.

His quotes truly make me question his intelligence because clearly someone is not asking him the right questions. When Cale Makar has the UFA card are the Avs going to act the same way? Are they going to draw a line in the sand that he can’t make a number higher than MacKinnon? If so, you may as well kiss him goodbye too. Good luck holding firm on that same narrative when it comes time to extend Makar.
