Chris Carson enters his fifth season with the Seattle Seahawks. After a lackluster and injury-riddled 2020 season, Carson looks to bounce back in 2021. With an upgraded offensive line and new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, Carson is poised for a huge year.
The question has never been productivity when it comes to Chris Carson. Before 2020, he had back-to-back seasons with 1,100-yards and 240 carries. But as they say, the best ability is availability, and in 2020 Carson was not consistently available. He only missed four games last season, but that bigger story is that he has yet to play a full NFL season, and his health has become a serious question.
In 2020, Carson finished with 681 rushing yards and five touchdowns and added 46 receptions, 267 receiving yards, and added another four touchdowns through the air. Despite missing four games, Carson finished the year as the RB16 in standard-scoring leagues.
Seattle had no semblance of a running game last season in part because their offensive line was bad, and Chris Carson was not healthy. To fix this, the Seahawks traded for Gabe Jackson from the Raiders, while Damien Lewis and Brandon Shell both got better last year, and they brought in Gerald Everett at the tight end position. Everett has shown he can be productive in the passing game, but he is also an underrated blocker.
We all know that Russell Wilson is an elite quarterback, but in 2020 he started off scorching hot and fizzled out towards the end of the season. The Seattle offense is loaded, but last year they became very one-dimensional without a consistent run game and heavily relied on Wilson to save the day.
OC Shane Waldron completely changes the offensive scheme in Seattle. Waldron has worked under Sean McVay for the past four years, and if anyone has watched the Rams under McVay, they love running the football. Since McVay was hired with the Rams, besides the 2019 season, the Rams have had a top-ten rush rate in the league. Waldron has worked directly under McVay and should bring a similar run-heavy system to Seattle.
Carson signed a big extension this offseason, and without a true number two back on the roster, he is going to get the majority of carries. I think the only caution for Carson is his availability because when he is healthy, he has RB1 upside. I am targeting Carson in all my leagues. I think his potential production outweighs his injury risks.
