Tyler Boyd Is Being Disrespected In Fantasy Football 2021

Guys, I’m sick of it. The disrespect has reached new levels in the past few weeks as fantasy season rolls around, and the recency bias around the Bengals’ wide receiver core has become unbearable to see. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are flying up draft boards while Tyler Boyd continues to plummet. Why, you ask? Well, to be honest, I’m not really sure why either.

From Weeks 1 through 10, when Joe Burrow was fully healthy, Tyler Boyd was the WR 13 in PPR leagues, yet now he’s being ranked as low as WR 32 on websites like Fantasy Pros. The Bengals drafted a talented rookie WR, and it seems like everyone has lost their minds. People don’t seem to realize that no matter how exciting the young studs in Chase and Higgins are, Tyler Boyd is still the most talented, most savvy, and most experienced wide receiver on this team.

The fact that Boyd is so much cheaper than Chase and Higgins is ridiculous, yet smart fantasy players will look to capitalize on it. What people are failing to realize is that Boyd’s role in the offense will not change with Chase’s addition or even a breakout season from Higgins.

Tyler Boyd is a gritty slot receiver, and his job is mainly in between the numbers. Higgins and Chase will both mainly be operating on the outside. If anything, they might open up the field for Boyd even more as they’ll often be the ones attracting safety help. This also bodes well for Joe Mixon’s fantasy value as the defense is going to be so focused on this star-studded trio, lanes will be wide open for Mixon to run into.

Boyd clearly had Joe Burrow’s trust last year as his volume was steady throughout the course of the season. Also, there seems to be a misconception he doesn’t score touchdowns, but Boyd was the most targeted Bengals wide receiver in the red zone last year.

The understanding here should be that the emergence of a sophomore receiver in Tee Higgins and a talented rookie in Ja’Marr Chase is not just going to completely kill off one of the most underrated and talented wide receivers in the league in Tyler Boyd. The fact that Boyd’s value is so much lower than Higgins’ or Chase’s is laughable to me. If you stack up on other positions early and are looking for a WR2 later in your draft, I personally would be comfortable with taking Boyd to fill that role. His slot-heavy role should provide him with enough volume to be a serviceable fantasy football starter, especially in PPR leagues.
