Titles are won and lost on the fringes of your roster. It’s impossible to not love some of the undrafted dart throws Kansas City took during the 2022 NFL Draft. We already talked about Justyn Ross who appears to be the diamond of rookie camp thus far. The real question is did the Chiefs find two gems? Can Jerrion Ealy carve out a role with Kansas City?
Kansas City is a hot bed for fantasy owners. You want in on this party. Which wide receiver is going to emerge as the lead target for Patrick Mahomes? I think we can say the same thing about the running back spot?
We think the go to guy this season is Clyde Edwards-Helaire… but does anybody actually have any confidence there? CEH only rushed for 646 yards and five touchdowns a year ago as the starter. If anything, his seat has to be warm?
KC also added Ronald Jones this offseason but it’s not like Rojo has been the model of consistency either. He’s also not a super reliable option in the passing game. The only other competition on the roster is 7th round pick out of Rutgers Isaih Pacheco (who’s okay… if he’s still on the roster four years from now that’s a win for him).
Ealy, 21, is an interesting prospect coming out of Ole Miss. Ealy was listed on my top 10 running back list despite not being drafted. The thing I really like about Ealy is he’s just a good athlete, man. He was drafted by the Diamondbacks in 2019. Ealy also comes with plus vision and just makes those cuts that make you smile in the open field. Ealy was also a monster five star recruit but for whatever reason never really got the touches he should have at Ole Miss.
Ealy might be a bit undersized (5’8″, 189) but this is the kind of guy Andy Reid loves. Brian Westbrook has entered the chat? Any undersized back with some wiggle that can master the screen game is incredibly valuable in this offense. You’re telling me Ealy can’t fill that void?
It’s a name to keep on your radar. There are more questions than answers when it comes to replacing production on this roster. Ealy could easily go from zero to hero in a hurry. The opportunity is there. Now it’s on the Ole Miss product to go prove he belongs.
