This post is a little bit optimistic for Suns fans. The Suns are on the way outside looking in for the 8th spot in the Western Conference in the NBA. If they are going to have any chance for that 8th spot, Cameron Johnson will need to step up majorly for the Suns.
Cameron Johnson plays 20 minutes a game for the Suns and is the backup guard for both Ricky Rubio and Devin Booker. He and Jevon Carter are the backups, not exactly comforting for the Suns. However, Jevon Carter plays less than Cameron Johnson, that’s why I went with him. In reality, either of these guys, or both, need to step up and make sure that second squad is firing on all cylinders to have a chance to even make the playoffs.
In those 20 minutes, Cameron only has 8.1 PPG, 1.1 APG, and 2.9 RPG. That is not spectacular. He’ll need to double those numbers for the Suns to start out with. The pressure isn’t all on him though, the Suns have decent depth on the wings and bigs to overcome those deficiencies at guard. Kelly Oubre Jr., Deandre Ayton, Dario Saric, Frank Kaminsky, Aron Baynes, and Mikal Bridges at the wings and bigs. The obvious need here is at guard. That’ll be the thing that holds the Suns back from getting that 8th seed.
If the Suns have any X factors that they will need in the their hunt for the 8th seed and the playoffs if they make it, it will be on their backup guards, Cameron Johnson specifically. He will need to upgrade his numbers almost immediately for the Suns to have a chance to make the playoffs. If not, well, good luck Suns.
