The range of perspectives on Cam Skattebo from people seems to be all over the map. Some love him, and others think he will be a total bum. Our job here today is to try to get to the truth of what really matters. With that said, here is your 2025 NFL Draft profile on the Arizona State tailback!
NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 2, Week 3, Week 7, Week 13, Conference Championships, Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl
Skattebo, 23, was a zero star recruit out of the state of California and got his collegiate start at Sacramento State. He flashed as a freshman posting 57 carries for 520 yards and six scores. Yes, it’s at a lower level, but 9.1 yards per carry as a freshy is impressive anyway you slice it. Skattebo comes back the next year and blows the doors off, taking full reins on the job recording 195 carries, 1,372 yards, and seven scores. Oh, and add in 371 yards through the air.
Who knows how this transpires without NIL and the transfer portal but that’s the world we live in now. Skattebo then took his talents to play for the Sun Devils, and the rock solid production continued. In 2023, Skattebo racked up 783 rushing yards on 64 attempts and nine carries. In 2024, Skattebo became the center of the universe for the Sun Devils as he posted 1,711 yards on 293 carries scoring 23 touchdowns via the ground. Don’t worry, that’s not all. Also add in 45 receptions for 605 yards and three more scores.
For anyone that cares, Skattebo did the 2020 season because of Covid, which is part of the reason why he’s at an advanced age.
The game against Texas in the playoff epitomized Skattebo being a center of the universe type player for Arizona. The guy was puking on the sideline and willing his team in the game all in one fell swoop. We can talk about how Ashton Jeanty carried his program, but he didn’t come close to what Skattebo actually did. When it was time to raise the level of play against a big boy opponent, it was Jeanty who fumbled twice against Penn State. Skattebo went for over 140 on the ground and two scores, ripped off another 99 in the air, oh, and threw a 42-yard score when his QB didn’t register a single passing touchdown. Against a way better front, Skattebo actually showed he can carry a team, and that’s a trait important for backs who can help close a game.
The Arizona State product checks in at 5-foot-10, 219, and jumped out of the gym at the Combine. A 39.5 inch vert isn’t what I expected but it does maybe explain some of the lower body explosion he has. The dude is so compact and runs low to the ground. Sometimes it’s not sexy, but having the ability to turn a one-yard run into a four-yard run is incredibly valuable, even if the naked eye doesn’t always appreciate it. You have to give the guy this. He has great short area footwork and does a great job navigating traffic within running lanes. It doesn’t take him long to fire up the engine and start maneuvering when he needs to be.
The pure speed is a question mark, and that’s totally fair and valid. Doesn’t have long arm and it limits his catch radius. He can take those checkdown,s but he’s probably not winning down the field routes at the NFL level. He was clocked in at 4.53 to 4.57 at the Arizona Pro Day, and we know those numbers are fluffed. He’s probably Kyren Williams’ level fast, but that is what it is.
Maybe you’re not getting home run ability. Maybe you’re not getting top end speed. What you are getting is toughness while having the ability to be a broken tackle king. His knee bend while having the ability to run low to the ground while maintaining a physical presence makes me a believer this can work.
The data doesn’t hurt his case. Skattebo ranked third in this class in 2.69 yards after contact, second (0.251) in forced missed tackle rate, and 26.8% big play rate, which was number one in the class.
I have a middle round grade on this player. I wasn’t always a believer, but it’s hard not to be given this past year. There’s just something about him, and honestly, part of me thinks a guy like this can become a representative of human evolution within the game of football. Why can’t a guy like Skattebo become a building block for bringing a unique new look at two running back sets, where he can become a rich man’s H-back while maintaining the versatility through creative play calling to also be a real running back?
Comp = Human evolution, Mike Alstott.
