Texas and Arizona State gave us an instant classic in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. This game looked over 10 minutes in but the fighting Cam Skattebo’s just wouldn’t go away. The 2025 NFL Draft Stock Report series is here to cover all of the highs and lows. Let’s get right to the notes.
Arizona State
Big test for Cam Skattebo. The Texas front is legit. Can he put the team on his back and make a name for himself? Screw the stats. I’ll give the guy praise because he deserves it. He did what Ashton Jeanty couldn’t. Guy went superhero mode and actually gave his team a shot to win the game when they had no business doing so.
The stat line here is insane. 30 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Oh, he’s not done. Add in a team high eight receptions for 99 yards. Oh, that’s not all somehow. Sam Leavitt couldn’t throw a touchdown (more on that later) but Skattebo somehow did on his only passing attempt.
He’s not slow and the guy is incredibly hard to tackle. That’s going to matter. Awesome leg drive and he’s coordinated. Not one of these goofy big guys. Bet you he can salsa dance while curling the 60 pound dumbbells.
You can tell he’s running on fumes too. Puking on the sidelines. Guy has heart. The cracked out Mike Alstott comp just feels so real. There has to be a place in the league for this guy. Peyton Hillis was kinda like this but he wasn’t producing like this. Not out here catching long ass touchdowns and then throwing them too. This guy is different from that. He’s very legitimate and needs to be taken seriously. When you do this against Texas while being outmanned playing Superman at the same time, you don’t ignore this.
No Jordyn Tyson, who was a huge part of their passing game offense. Xavier Guillory is supposed to be the number one now. Had a nice game in the Big 12 Title game but was held in check here. In fairness, Sam Leavitt wasn’t creating any big time passing plays so there’s that too. Think we found out Leavitt is cute CFB quarterback but not anything to take seriously at the next level. If he could a single thing, they probably would have won the game. 4.8 yards per attempt and a pick. Just brutal.
I’m going to trash Isaiah Bond in a second but it’s a two-way street. The corner Javan Robinson made a hell of a play to reel this pick in. Showed off some serious wheels to keep up with Bond too. Heck of a play here.
This Arizona State defense actually has a few guys worth talking about. Shamari Simmons played well too. Played the well run and made a beautiful pass breakup. Started out at Austin Peay but has really started making more of a name for himself over the last two years. A later round safety I’ll be intrigued to watch during the pre-draft events.
Texas
Quinn Ewers is the opposite of Jalen Milroe in terms of executing the intermediate passing game. You can say whatever you want about the guy but he’s excellent in that area with serious arm talent. Looks as healthy as he’s been all year. Came out firing right away. Took two passes to score the first touchdown.
By the way, missing the starting right tackle the entire game. Starting left tackle leaves early in the third. Both are NFL guys. Goosby is a nice replacement but it’s obviously not ideal.
Can’t understand why people hate this guy. It’s nonsense. How about the touchdown throw on 4th down to keep the season alive in overtime? Was a clinic in overtime. Made every single throw and was accurate doing it. Totally took the game over when it mattered most. Glad we got to see some clutch gene out of him because we know the talent is real. But he hasn’t always lived up to the talent and has been set back by nagging injuries. Fought through and played damn well.
Finished the game 20/30 for 322 yards, three touchdowns, and one pick. 10.7 YPA and a 92 QBR. Texas needed his A game and they got it to keep the season alive.
It’s Silas Bolden > Isaiah Bond and I don’t care what anybody says. I’ve had a crush on Bolden since he was at Oregon State. Dude is a weapon in the open field. The punt return touchdown was damn impressive.
You’re an idiot if you think this Bond is an elite player. Belongs nowhere in the top 4 rounds. The pick Quinn Ewers threw was largely because he can’t fight for the ball in the air. Brings nothing to the table beyond speed. Held off the box score sheet again.
Explain to me what makes him good? Zero production. He’s a zero across the board minus being fast. Need more than that to be a good football player. I’m tired of talking about the guy because he’s a bum and propped up by the propaganda over nothing.
I think one of the only things we learned is that these nickel runners Texas have just have a hard time closing the game. Not a ton of power with either. Quintrevion Wisner had a bad fumble near his own goal line that ended up in a safety. Those short yardage areas, neither Wisner or Blue are that guy. Not that it’s something we learned given that Texas has been gashed with injuries at this position.
Four carries for four yards for Blue. Wisner had 45 yards on 18 carries. Couldn’t run the ball a lick. I think we have a good understanding on both players.
Not sure I buy this cornerback Jahdae Barron. Not saying he’s bad but is there ever a wow moment? Made some tackles but never made a real wow play in coverage. Is Barron that good or is Leavitt not capable of making a play? I think it was the latter. I can’t wait to watch him against Ohio State. I bet you Jeremiah Smith kicks his face in. I don’t see elite. I see a lot of good.
I love Ethan Burke. This dude is so underrated. If he played for another team, he would get so much more hype. He doesn’t start because Barryn Sorrell is in front of him. The guy is so damn long. Blocked a field goal. He’s making plays in the backfield. He’s swatting down passes. Mark me down for some Burke.
Vernon Broughton starting to take strides. He’s not Murphy or Sweat from last year but made some plays stopping the run. They got gashed but it would have been far worse if he wasn’t there.
Andrew Mukuba sealed the win for Texas in OT. Michael Taaffe is a gritty player who people will cry didn’t get called for a targeting call late. Both of these guys are making a name for themselves. Taaffe is like sneaky good. He plays the ball well and makes hits.
Anthony Hill & Colin Simmons are freaks for the future. When they’re eligible, please give them to me on my team. Wow freak shows.
