California To Allow Some Fans into Statewide MLB Stadiums
There is a brighter day coming and it’s something Rob Manfred can’t stick his nose into. A sigh of relief for California is already around with COVID-19 vaccines at the ready and a considerably lower amount of virus transmission. All around the state restaurants and other businesses are opening up for outdoor seating after California endured the worst of the virus during the wintertime. This also means there is some great news for statewide MLB stadiums.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the news on March 5, 2020, that all teams would allow some sort of admittance to the ballgames by April 1. How many attend depends on color-coded tiers dividing portions of the state. The tiers have to do with the severity of transmission of the virus with purple being the highest. If a stadium lands in a purple area, they can only allow 100 fans into the stadium. The ultimate hope is to minimize the virus to the yellow tier which allows 67% of stadium capacity.
“We have confidence that when you look forward to April, to opening day, and where we are likely to be if we all do our jobs if we don’t let our guard down and spike the ball — wrong sport — then I have all the confidence in the world that fans will be back safely, in a lot of these outdoor venues.” – Governor Gavin Newsom.
It’s very pleasant to think that the sports world is inching its way back to normality. Fans are vital to the game and more than you’d think. They provide the energy and even momentum to all sports. The temporary fix of the speakers providing fan sounds doesn’t have the same effect, obviously. There’s nothing like the enchantment of a warm summer’s evening with people gathering for the same passion of watching baseball. It’s getting close.
