Caitlin Clark makes WNBA history, gives credit to team

Caitlin Clark is living up to the hype. On Saturday, she became the first rookie in WNBA history to post a triple-double. Clark recorded 19 PTS, 12 REB, and 13 AST in the Fever’s 83-78 victory over the No. 1 seed New York Liberty. Despite her thrilling personal performance, Clark doesn’t want all the credit. She wants everyone to focus on the team, and the fact they won.

Walking through the tunnel after the game, Caitlin Clark made no mention of her stat line. Instead, she made a W sign with her hands and shouted out the fans and her team, saying “she’s happy to get another one of these (a win)”. Later on, during the post game presser, Clark was asked what she was thinking when she realized she had made history. Her response? “I was trying to get the crowd to be quiet, I think Aliyah (Boston) was shooting a free throw, or somebody was shooting a free throw…I appreciate it, but I was just trying to get them to be quiet.” Even in the middle of making history, her mind was on her team and on getting the win.

This is not the only historical feat Clark has achieved this season. She is also the first rookie in WNBA history to record 350 PTS, 100 REB, and 150 AST, all accomplished in 22 games. She has four double-doubles with assists, another WNBA rookie record.

Defeating the top ranked New York Liberty and making history all in one night should be a huge confidence boost for Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. As the WNBA All-Star break approaches, the Fever still sit at the 7 seed with a 9-13 record. They appear to be finding their footing, fairing 5-5 in their last 10 games versus a 2-8 start to the beginning of the season. Despite their losing record, the Fever are still in the playoff picture.
