Fantasy Hockey: Capitals Add Thompson, Chychrun, Roy

The Washington Capitals have been busy this offseason. They’re still trying to make the team functional so that the great Ovechkin can surpass the goal scoring record. After adding Logan Thompson, Jakob Chychrun, and Matt Roy… what does it all mean in terms of fantasy hockey? That’s why you’re here, duh, so I’m just going to get on with it now.

I’ve already done a fantasy hockey breakdown on Pierre-Luc Dubois (link). Now we’re going to wrap up the rest of the moves Washington completed this offseason.

Jakob Chychrun:

This one is fascinating and way beyond just the fact that the Senators are hilarious. That trade was a total L by Ottawa. Fantasy wise, it creates an interesting dynamic on the blue line for the Caps.

John Carlson is still the guy there but he’s turning 35 soon. With all the injuries Carlson has had, maybe they give him a decreased role and let Chychrun handle those duties.

That part is a big maybe. More so than anything, the only clear part is that it probably reduces the role that Rasmus Sandin previously had. Sandin is probably now worthless in fantasy.

Chychrun had 41 points last year in a similar role with Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson eating those crucial minutes. No reason he can’t have a career best season on a Capitals team that is somehow the best team he’s ever been part of.

Matt Roy:

Roy is a pure defensive defenseman and is one of the best in the business at doing so. He had a career high 197 blocked shots last year. If your league values those, maybe Roy is a good play. If not, he’s just not an offensive minded player that produces enough for fantasy.

Logan Thompson:

Price will be key but fantasy managers should proceed with caution. Thompson has had really good numbers in the past but that was with a Vegas team that plays unbelievable defense in front of him. In three-plus seasons with Vegas, Thompson owns a .912 SV%.

I just find it hard to believe he can match that success in Washington behind a much worse team. That and the fact that Charlie Lindgren was really good last year. There is no guarantee Thompson even registers the team high in starts.

Thompson is a pass for me unless he’s essentially free. I understand the intrigue but there’s too many red flags here to buy in.
