Broncos Waive KJ Hamler

The Sean Payton karma might be real. Just shortly after Payton opened his mouth, the Broncos have now lost two wide receivers. Tim Patrick tore his Achilles. Now KJ Hamler is being released after it’s been revealed that the former Penn State product has a heart issue.

Mike Garafolo was the first to report the news:

The #Broncos plan to waive WR K.J. Hamler today with a non-football illness designation, sources say, though the transaction is procedural and designed with an eye toward bringing him back. Hamler posted on Instagram that he was diagnosed with pericarditis.

“I will be back on the field — better and stronger than ever — as soon as possible this season!” Hamler wrote. “I feel great physically and this is very frustrating for me to deal with. I know most of you have heard or know of my story and these past few years what I’ve been going through on and off the field.

“I’ll get past this just like everything else on this journey! I will continue to elevate. I forever stand on business.”

It feels like Hamler has been hurt since he entered the league in 2020. The Broncos have not gotten their money’s worth since selecting Hamler during the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The same draft that they took Jerry Jeudy in the first round. Hamler has played in just 10 games over the last two years.

Will KJ Hamler Ever Become Fantasy Relevant?

There is some tricky terminology that we also have to talk about here. The Broncos are waiving Hamler with a non-football illness designation. Putting him on the reserve/non-football injury list would have ended his season. It sounds like Hamler will be out for a few weeks rather than a few months.

However, if you’re Hamler, why would you want to return? This is a guy that needs a fresh start and getting out of the altitude would probably do his heart a favor anyway. I can think of a team that’s in Pennsylvania that could use a slot receiver…
