Davis Webb will be coaching Russell Wilson next season, but we can’t say we’re totally surprised. Six years younger than Wilson, Webb has been hired to become the Broncos’ next quarterback coach. Sean Payton is rounding out his staff and has taken a shot on the former Giants quarterback.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Sean Payton is moving quickly on his staff hires. Joe Lombardi is joining on as the offensive coordinator. Vance Joseph has also been hired to run the defense. Payton will likely continue to call plays since that’s kinda his specialty. It’s still a great opportunity for Webb to get into coaching and learn from a former Super Bowl winning coach.
I’m not convinced that Webb couldn’t beat out Wilson for the starting quarterback job but that’s a conversation for another day. It feels like only a matter of time before Webb becomes one of these QB whisperers like Jordan Palmer.
It’s a great landing spot too for this reason. There is no way the Broncos’ offense can get worse. Denver went 4-11 and Wilson posted a 16-11 TD to INT ratio and 37.0 QBR. Even if the Broncos get 10% better, Webb will get his credit and will get an opportunity quickly for an offensive coordinator job somewhere else.
Side note: Why Vance Joseph? I just gotta know. I have a sneaky suspicion the Broncos’ defense will be worse next year. When you read this back next year, we’ll know why.
