Are we sure a conversation doesn’t need to be had on the quarterback market? We’re just going to give Brock Purdy this contract, huh? Okay… I guess Puka Nacua is laughing somewhere.

The 49ers and Purdy have come to terms on a new contract extension. Yes, you’re reading those numbers right. It’s a five year deal worth a total of $265 million. $181 million of that deal is guaranteed.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news:

49ers underwent major changes this offseason, moving on from several key players, all with the understanding that they’d soon be paying Brock Purdy a massive contract after having the best bargain in football the past three years.

The $53 million AAV is certainly a number that doesn’t appear like a coincidence. Consider this…

Justin Herbert sits at $52.5 million, He’s a tick behind Tua Tagovailoa, who makes $53.1 million per year, and Jared Goff makes the exact same. There’s the context if you’re looking for it.

Brock Purdy Is Never Winning The MVP Award

Purdy, 25, finished the 2024 season seventh in the NFL in QBR (68.0), 10th in passing yards (3,864), and third in yards per attempt (8.5) while playing 15 games. He once again was trash in cold weather (which has been a theme in the past). We’re going to find out a lot about Purdy now after the roster around him has deteriorated. I’m just not sure the 49ers are going to like the result of all of this.

Regardless, cheers to Purdy. The guy was Mr. Irrelevant, once upon a time. For a guy who was taken with the last pick in his draft class, this is an insane pay day, all things considered. Credit to him for being that outlier.
