Brian Callahan: Treylon Burks Is A Special Teamer

Calvin Ridley can compare Treylon Burks to all these great wide receivers. At the end of the day, it’s all a bunch of nonsense, as I talked about in an earlier post. Of course, if you’re smart then you listened to Trey years ago and never dumped big resources into Burks as a fantasy asset, to begin with. Buckle up your seat belts because you’re going to want to hear this quote from new head coach, Brian Callahan.

Callahan didn’t pull any punches. He basically called Burks a special teams player.

We can also read between the lines here. DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, and Tyler Boyd are the top three wide outs. The fact that Callahan already sounds like this makes it pretty damn obvious that he knows he won’t beat out Boyd for that third spot. Nor does it make sense given that Boyd is probably best suited as the slot player. Keep in mind that Cincinnati didn’t even offer Boyd a deal to have him return. The Bengals were more than content giving that role to Trenton Irwin and or Charlie Jones. What does that tell you about Burks?

What more do I need to say that I haven’t already? I don’t want to dump on Burks but there are just things that should have been obvious from day one. He was a lump of clay that had no idea how to run routes. He also won on deep balls in college but was never fast enough to repeat that type of play style at the NFL level. There is a chance Burks develops into a contributor but that’s all going to be on a wait and see approach.

Someone with more time than me should jot down all of the people that gave first round grades to Treylon Burks. It’s a clear indication that they have no clue how to scout wide receivers. I have no idea why you would trust someone more than me based on past data but that’s another topic for another day.
