Brentford striker Ivan Toney has admitted to breaking the English Football Association’s (FA) rules surrounding betting on matches. This comes ahead of his scheduled appearance in front of a disciplinary panel, according to ESPN.
From 2017 to 2021 Toney was found to have breached FA rule E8 over 260 times. Over this period of time, Toney played for four different clubs throughout England.
FA rule E8 states that players “shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition; or any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters.”
Toney is 26 years old and in the form of his life for Brentford this season. In 21 Premier League matches, Toney has scored 14 goals, the third most by any player this season. He has played a huge role in getting Brentford to ninth place on the table in their second season back in England’s top division.
However, he will likely face a significant suspension that could see him miss out on a good amount of Brentford’s final 15 matches. For reference, in 2019, Daniel Sturridge was suspended for two weeks and fined £75,000 after being found guilty of breaching the FA betting rules.
Sturridge was charged on two of 11 counts which is significantly less than the 262 counts that Toney is being charged with. If Sturridge faced a two-week suspension then Toney could be facing a few-month suspension.
This is very unfortunate timing for Toney as he had been called up to the England squad for a few UEFA Nations League matches ahead of the 2022 World Cup, but did not play at all. Toney was then left out by Gareth Southgate for England’s World Cup squad.
