Brad Treliving Reveals His Top Priority As New Leafs GM

In case you missed it, Brad Treliving has been named the new general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The news comes on the heels of Kyle Dubas getting sacked and has since taken the Penguins’ job. Treliving takes over for Dubas but that doesn’t mean the challenges have gone away in Toronto. The core four still hasn’t won anything.

During the initial presser for Treliving, the new Leafs GM talked about his top priority now that he has the job. It starts with retaining Auston Matthews:

VIA ESPN:

“I communicated with Auston via text,” Treliving confirmed. “I know [his agent] Judd [Moldaver], there’s a great personal relationship [there]. We’re not going to get into any public discourse about contracts but obviously we know where these contracts are at. Auston is one of the elite players in the world. We’re not talking about [just] a good player. Getting to Auston is a priority.”

“It’s getting down [to Arizona] and me getting a chance to meet him and more importantly, Auston getting a chance to meet me,” Treliving said. “And [for him to] know what we’re about and just talk a little bit. That’s priority No. 1. We’re prepared to get after it. I’m excited to get a chance to meet with him and thrilled to work with him.”

It’s funny because Treliving really never made comments about making sure the core four stuck together. He kinda skated around that question in a smart way. Regardless, I think we have all the information we need right here. It all starts with Auston Matthews. Whether or not Toronto gets an extension done with Matthews may alter their offseason plans.
