Brad Stevens earns 2023-24 NBA Executive of the Year

Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens has been named the 2023-24 NBA Executive of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. He earned the award over Oklahoma City’s Sam Presti, who finished in second, and Minnesota’s Tim Connelly.

Stevens accumulated 16 of the 29 first-place votes, plus six second-place votes and three third-place votes; Presti tallied four first-place votes, seven second-place votes and six third-place votes; Connelly had four first-place votes too, in addition to two second-place votes and three third-place tallies.

Knicks executive Leon Rose, Dallas’ Nico Harrison, Houston’s Rafael Stone and Sacramento’s Monte McNair–who won the award last year–were the only others to earn first-place votes.

Stevens, in his third year in the Celtics’ front office, engineered the Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis moves in the offseason. The Celtics parlayed Marcus Smart, Danilo Gallinari (who didn’t play for Boston), Mike Muscala plus picks into Porzingis followed by flipping Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams for Holiday.

He also stacked four second-round picks on draft night and used two second-rounders to acquire Xavier Tillman ahead of the trade deadline. He may be solely a depth piece right now, but Tillman, 25, is in the last year of his rookie contract and Boston will have his bird rights this offseason–which is incredibly important due to the fact that they’re a second-apron team, limiting their roster-building flexibility.

Stevens has had a heck of a last 12 months. He’s pushed all the right buttons to make Boston a perennial contender, whether it secures banner No. 18 this season or not.
