The Boston Celtics cannot keep Jaylen Brown

After another disappointing playoff run, the Celtics come up short once again and it’s time for some decisions. Decisions start with Brad Stevens, and boy, they haven’t been the best. Now, with coming up short of a championship once again, it is time for Jaylen Brown to be traded.

The Celtics almost had one of the best comebacks of all time in the playoffs, and Jaylen Brown was the reason why they couldn’t complete it. In fact, when Brown stepped off the floor, the Celtics might’ve been better.

With all this being said, the Boston Celtics have an intense offseason this year. Brown is available for a contract extension in 2024, and after making the All-NBA Second Team, he’is eligible for the supermax contract. This contract will for north of $290 million over five seasons, including possibly $66 million in 2028-29.

If I am the Celtics and want to compete for the next decade, Brown will not receive this offer. Now you might be saying, Griffin, that is stupid. Why wouldn’t you pay your superstar? Well, fellow Boston Celtics fans, Jayson Tatum is also available for a super-max contract the following year.

Plus, Tatum’s contract will be even more than Brown’s. So, do you want over $600 million in cap space eaten up over only five seasons? Absolutely not. Today, the NBA has proven that the “Big 3” era is over, and in Boston, you have the “Big 2”. In this NBA, look at the Heat and Nuggets. They have one to two superstar players followed up by key role players, and it’s working. They’re both in the NBA Finals now.

The point that I want to get at is that if you want to still compete for a championship, Brown can’t have that massive contract. You won’t be able to re-sign guys like Robert Williams, Al Horford, Marcus Smart, Derrick White, and Malcolm Brogdon in the future.

I want Tatum and Brown to play together for the entirety of their career, but at a price. Don’t break the duo up, but don’t give Brown the super-max. That way, you can keep the rest of the pieces to the puzzle.

Let us know what you think the Celtics should do in the comments.
