Bob Melvin set to become manager for San Francisco Giants, per reports

After firing Gabe Kapler back in September, the San Francisco Giants have found their next skipper. Longtime manager Bob Melvin is returning to the Bay Area to be the Giants’ next manager.

Melvin joins the Giants after only two years with the San Diego Padres, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic was the first to break the news Tuesday.

The Padres permitted Melvin to interview with the Giants Sunday, and it only took two days to make it official. It was a bit of a twist as general manager A.J. Preller and the Padres said Melvin would stay as manager of the Padres earlier this month.

Still, the writing was on the wall. The Padres finished 82-80, third place in the NL West. Reports came out
last month that the relationship between Preller and Melvin was “unfixable.” Barely winning over 80 games with a talented Padres roster is inexcusable, and it seemed like Preller and Melvin just finger pointed at each other.

Melvin did lead the Padres to an NLCS appearance in 2022, but it was a steep decline this season, even with the third-highest payroll in MLB, per Spotrac.

The Giants never got it going either, finishing with a 79-83 record this season. After Kapler was fired, Melvin was quickly seen as a top candidate with his ties to the Bay Area.

Not only did Melvin grow up in the Bay, but he managed the Oakland A’s from 2012-2021. The three-time Manager of the Year award winner has only managed on the West Coast, spending time with the A’s, Mariners, Diamondbacks, Padres and now Giants.

He went 171-153 with the Padres and will enter his 21st managerial season with a 1,517-1,425 record.

The Giants are basically winners here. Preller losing one of the best managers in the league to a division rival is going to sting, and it paves the road for Preller to be the next scapegoat in San Diego.
