Bill O’Brien Takes The Boston College Head Coaching Job
Bill O’Brien is a Boston guy and the perfect opportunity fell right into his lap. Jeff Hafley left Boston College to take the Packers defensive coordinator job. That opened the door for O’Brien to return home. The Boston native will return to the area and will take the BC head coaching job.
Boston College released a presser to announce the news:
“I am thrilled to welcome Bill O’Brien, his wife Colleen, and his sons Jack and Michael to Boston College,” James said. “When we embarked on this search, we prioritized finding a coach who believes in our mission and vision, who has a plan for greatness on and off the field, and who will work tirelessly to elevate BC Football.”
James added, “Bill is a gifted leader who has had a tremendous amount of success as a head coach and coordinator at both the collegiate and NFL levels. His passion for teaching football and developing young men make him a great fit to lead Boston College to greater heights.”
O’Brien, 54, spent this past season as the Patriots offensive coordinator. He previously committed to become the OC at Ohio State prior to this job opening. It didn’t take long for Ohio State to fill their OC role. Chip Kelly will fill that void (which will be my next post. It’s been a busy weekend.)
At the end of the day, despite the flaws of O’Brien, this feels like a strong hire. It’s not like Boston College gets to pick and choose whoever they want. Based on Hafley leaving this late in the hiring cycle, to land a coach with NFL experience guiding the Texans to the playoffs, BC fans should be pretty happy with this outcome.
