San Francisco 49ers pursued Ben Roethlisberger in 2022 and tried to get him out of retirement

Big Ben Roethlisberger had the chance to come out of retirement in 2022 and play for the San Francisco 49ers, but big ben stuck through with the black and gold. Via Mark Madden of 105.9 The X.

Roethlisberger retired in 2022 after a long 18-year career in the NFL. He would go on to play all of those 18 years with the black and gold. Undoubtedly, Roethlisberger is not only a Pittsburgh Steelers legend but an NFL legend. Outside of his retirement from the NFL in 2022, the 49ers tried to persuade him to join them because of injuries at the QB position. Roethlisberger declined the pursuit because of his heart is with the black and gold.

“I was really comfortable with my decision (to retire),” Roethlisberger said. “Last year, there was some truth to the Niners thing, just in a sense that they were reaching out just to, maybe, gauge my interest.” Via theScore.

“I had conversations with my agent, with my wife, my family. … I’d be lying if I didn’t say there was a small part of me that was intrigued. I could still do it and prove to people that I could still play. At the end of the day, I just can’t see myself in anything other than black and gold.” Via theScore.

San Francisco battled injuries all season long in last year, even up until their last game. Now Las Vegas Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a pedal foot fracture on December 4th last year. Also, second-year quarterback Trey Lance suffered a pedal ankle fracture and dislocation on September 18th. After Lance got hurt, Brock Purdy went down in their NFC title matchup against the Eagles.

The 49ers were rumored as a potential suitor for Roethlisberger after his retirement, if the former Steelers wanted to make a return. However, that appears rather unlikely.
