Bears Widely Expected To Give Ryan Poles A Contract Extension

Ryan Poles is 15-36 during his three years as Bears general manager. If you have been paying attention at all, you know Poles doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing. You’re welcome for this in advance. It’s all the evidence you could possibly need.

It turns out the Bears ownership group are more than thrilled with the job dead brain Poles is doing. It’s being reported that Poles is likely to receive a contract extension in the near future.

VIA ESPN:

“One thing Johnson’s agent, Rick Smith, articulated before the interview process started was the importance of being aligned with his general manager.”

“Is the GM willing to check his ego at the door as the coach is willing to check his ego at the door so that they get in the same boat and row in the same direction?” Smith said on the 2nd City Gridiron podcast.

“A team source told ESPN that Johnson never requested a change at general manager.”

“The Bears do not publicly comment about the contracts of coaches and front office personnel, nor would Poles address whether he has assurances of receiving a contract extension when asked on Jan. 7. According to a team source with knowledge of the situation, Poles’ deal runs through the 2026 season, and the expectation is he will receive an extension to align him with Johnson, who signed a five-year contract with Chicago, a term that is common for first-time head coaches.”

Poles, 39, is signed through the 2026 NFL Season, which means the Bears plan to extend him beyond that point. Who knows why but I guess they’re a big happy family after Ben Johnson was brought in.

Speaking of Ben Johnson, you didn’t gloss over that key quote, did you? The part where his agent spoke out and said “the general manager needs to check his ego at the door”. That sure sounds like maybe Poles takes on more of a puppet role than he’s already in. Does Johnson end up having more say on the roster? Keep in mind, Poles already has to get approval by Kevin Warren on everything he does.

When you factor all of that in, can someone explain to me why the Bears are in a rush to extend Poles and how do I contact his PR firm? I’ve truly never seen a guy screw up this bad and constantly get rewarded for it but that’s the world we live in.
