The Chicago Bears are going to be rocking the throwbacks today. You can see the picture above. Most days where the team rocks a throwback, it doesn’t mean a ton. In this instance, it means a lot. The Bears will wear the throwbacks from 1936. A time in the NFL where African American players were not allowed to participate.
The Bears wore these uniforms for just one season, 1936. The NFL also didn’t allow African American players in the league from 1934-1945. Therefore, this will be the first time African American players will wear this uniform. It’s a special day in Chicago.
“This Sunday against the Vikings, our players will wear the 1936 classic jersey,” McCaskey said in the video. “That was from a time when unfortunately African-Americans were not included on the Bears or other NFL rosters. Integration of the NFL and the Bears was too long in coming. But we’re proud that this year’s Bears will be the first African-Americans to wear these jerseys.”
Chicago will also wear the uniforms against the Cowboys on December 5th. That, of course, means the Vikings will rock purple today. It’s the first time in the history of the franchise they will rock purple in Chicago. The Vikings have only beaten the Bears in Chicago twice this decade. Maybe the color change will change their luck?
