D’Andre Swift will now play for his third NFL team in three seasons. After being traded to the Eagles via Detroit on draft day last year, the former Georgia product will now take his talents to Chicago. The Bears and Swift have agreed to terms on a contract right as NFL free agency has opened up.
Swift will sign a three year deal with the Bears for $24 million. $15.3 million will be guaranteed.
The NFL Network team of Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport were the firsts to report the news:
Swift, 25, will join the backfield in Chicago that currently consists of Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson. It’s pretty safe to assume given the paycheck here that Swift will be the lead back. Herbert will probably be given the short yardage situations while Swift handles the pass catching duties.
The former Georgia product notched 1,049 rushing yards in 16 regular-season games for Philadelphia. Swift proved he can stay healthy and certainly performed well with the Eagles. He also added in 214 receiving yards and five total touchdowns. It would have been more touchdowns if he didn’t keep getting snipped by the tush push. We’ll see what the Eagles do during free agency to replace Swift.
The Bears strike first right away in free agency. Will this prove to be a smart move? Paying running backs usually isn’t a wise investment but given the talent and age, it’s hard to really argue about this deal on the surface. It’s a nice deal for both sides.
