Ex-Liverpool Forward Sadio Mane Signs with German Giants
The rich get richer. The undisputed giants of German football, Bayern Munich, have added another weapon to their deep attacking arsenal. Sadio Mane will join Bayern on a $42.9 million move as he departs Liverpool after six years with the club, according to numerous reports, including ESPN.
Mane’s potential exit from the English side appeared more and more like a potential reality of late, and with the arrival of young striker Darwin Nunez at Anfield earlier this week, a move was necessary. The 30-year-old had one year remaining on his deal, but a change of scenery was realized.
Mane recorded 120 goals for Liverpool in 269 appearances and registered 23 goals and five assists for the club this past season. The Senegalese international has been integral in manager Jurgen Klopp’s system since his signing in 2016. Mane helped lead the club to three Champions League final appearances, including their 2019 title win over Tottenham. He was also key in helping the Reds’ end their 30-year league title drought with their 2020 Premier League triumph.
As for the transfer fee, Liverpool will receive $33.5 million up front from Bayern, with potential add-ons totaling $9.45 million if additional clauses are achieved.
Mane now joins one of the most prolific attacking fronts in all of world football. Although star striker Robert Lewandowski is expected to leave the club this summer, Bayern has no shortage of options with Thomas Muller, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman and now Sadio Mane anchoring the attack. Bayern’s search for an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title will begin next fall.
