Barrett For Sexton? How About Ntilikina and Knox Instead?

Cleveland Cavalier fans are hoping the team can get some decent value from trading Sexton, who has one year left on his contract. Some fans even think that Cleveland can put together a trade package for RJ Barrett, but a trade of Sexton for Barrett is anything but equal. “Get that garbage out of here!” – Knicks Fans.

What The Knicks Should Do

Yes, the Knicks overachieved in 2020, doubling their projected win total and finishing fourth in the East. The team also had the Coach of the Year and Most Improved Player and has cap space to play with this offseason. Leon Rose and the front office have brought in the proper personnel and shifted the culture of the New York Knicks organization. I see the wisdom in signing Sexton for the right price once he hits free agency, but why the rush from some Knicks fans to give up multiple first-round picks and young talent for a guy entering the final year of his contract? Waiting a year will provide a plethora of free-agent guard options, from Devonte Graham to Kyle Lowry to Lonzo Ball.

Calm Down Knickerbocker Fans

Allow the Knicks front office to be patient and repeat the offseason success they had the last offseason. I trust them to make the right move. If New York fails to sign any big names but is able to upgrade the point guard position with a veteran PG on a shorter deal, the team will unquestionably improve even further, as it would mean fewer or even zero minutes for Elfrid Payton. and we get a Veteran point guard on a 1-2 year deal that isn’t Elfrid Payton that’s a massive upgrade. This free-agent class is trash compared to 2022 and 2023.

The Knicks should continue to play the slow game and develop their young talent. Julius Randle is coming off his MIP season and should only continue to improve. Barrett is a star build for Broadway and he will also continue to improve. Keeping Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin should also be prioritized. Toppin did not have a lot of opportunities but his defense and footwork looked better as the season progressed. People understandably bash his lack of production, as he was a top 10 pick, but he did not have access to the usual training time of summer league and months of preseason workouts due to the pandemic and quick turnaround after the bubble.

I am very confident that Barrett is being left out of any trade talks. The most I would be willing to give up for Collin Sexton is Kevin Knox, Frank Ntilikina, and the 32nd Pick via Detroit along with a future second-round pick.
