Orlando Brown Jr. made it clear he wanted to be a left tackle and only a left tackle, now he will in Kansas City. The former third-round selection by the Baltimore Ravens will now be protecting the blindside or Patrick Mahomes, per Ian Rapoport who also provided us the details of the trade.
The Chiefs will be receiving a 2021 second-round pick and a 2022 sixth-round pick along with Orlando Brown in exchange for their 2021 first, third and fourth-round picks and a 2022 fifth-round pick.
Patrick Mahomes is likely jumping for joy after seeing this news. Earlier in the offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs cut both of their starting tackles in Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher which created a hole the size of the Grand Canyon along their offensive line. They signed Joe Thuney early in free agency, but he’s a guard so the issue of finding a quality offensive tackle, or two, was unsolved. Now, Kansas City has acquired a man who’s made it clear that he will only play left tackle.
As of now, no extension is in the works between Brown and the Chiefs. Mike Garafolo has reported that the current plan is that Orlando Brown Jr. will play out the final year of his deal. Playing left tackle comes with left tackle money, Brown will most likely receive a lucrative contract in 2022.
With the draft in under a week away, Kansas City clearly doesn’t want to be chasing needs. They get a proven player and didn’t give up much in the process. Protecting your franchise quarterback is always a smart move, and Brett Veach is a very smart man.
