Avalanche Sign Devon Toews To Seven-Year Extension
Devon Toews was heading into the final year of his contract and there was real concern that the Avalanche may lose him. Toews made it clear that he wanted to stay and now the two sides have gotten a deal deal. Colorado fans can sleep easy that they won’t lose their stud defenseman this offseason.
The Athletic’s Peter Baugh was the first to report the news. Toews and the Avs have agreed to a seven-year extension. Toews will carry a $7.25 million AAV during the duration of the contract.
This contract is a bargain! Toews, 29, was acquired from the Islanders for two second round picks. Lou Lamoriello got absolutely hosed on that deal. According to Evolving-Hockey, since the trade to Colorado, Toews ranks second among all-blue liners in GAR (53.2) and WAR (9.3). What more do I need to say? Toews is amazing.
Joe Sakic and the rest of the front office in Colorado deserve serious praise here. To keep Toews on that price tag is great business. He’s one of the best defensemen in the sport and now he and Cale Makar are signed for the foreseeable future. Yes, it’s a raise on his old contract but Toews deserves far more than this. The cap is expected to rise in a significant way moving forward too.
Toews notched 50 points across 25:06 minutes of ice time in 80 games a season ago. Most of those points came five-on-five too with Makar running the PP.
What more is there to say? Great job by Colorado here.
