Devon Toews Wants An Extension With Colorado
Have no fear, Devon Toews wants to stay! The stud blue liner is heading into the final year of his contract while carrying an AAV of $4.1 million. Toews is criminally underpaid so no one would blame him if he tried to cash in after this year. There should be real fear in Colorado that this could be the last year Toews rocks an Avalanche sweater. The good news is he really wants to stay.
“I’d rather it not drag on into the season,” Toews said Wednesday, per Aarif Deen of Mile High Sports. “My intent is to stay here for the rest of my career. If we’re able to get that done, that would be awesome.”
Toews, 29, was acquired from the Islanders for two second round picks. That trade is just one of the heists of the century. According to Evolving-Hockey, since the trade to Colorado, Toews ranks second among all-blue liners in GAR (53.2) and WAR (9.3).
The scary part is he’s not even the best defenseman on his own team. That title belongs to Cale Makar. He might not even be the third-best defenseman on his own team but admittedly that is all projection. In case you don’t know, I’m referring to this player.
Toews notched 50 points this past season and 37 of them came at even strength. Toews will not be cheap unless he takes the hometown discount. It remains to be seen how much the cap goes up next year but it’s expected to be a sizeable amount. Colorado doesn’t exactly have mountains of cap space either (CapFriendly).
The positive out of all of this is there is communication that Toews wants to stay. That’s all you can ask for right now. The vibes here seem better than what’s brewing in Tampa.
