The Boston Celtics still have an open roster spot and Austin Rivers wants in. When Rivers declared for the 2012 NBA Draft, I was lowkey convinced they were going to end up with him. Don’t forget, his dad Doc was the head coach of the team then. Rivers went 10th but the Celtics had two picks (21 & 22) and possibly could have traded up. They ended up with Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo instead. Arguably, all three players stink, but at least Rivers is still in the league… or at least was last year.
The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn notes that Rivers has drawn interest from the team. Rivers says the interest is mutual.
“I had a great talk with Brad (Stevens) actually like a week ago,” Rivers revealed during an appearance on “The Bill Simmons Podcast.”
Rivers added about his chit-chat with Stevens: “I told him I’d love to be a part of the team. He said a lot of positive things. We’ll see if that’s something that will come to fruition. I’ve always loved Brad. I’ve always been a fan of him.”
Rivers, 31, averaged 4.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists, shooting 43.5% from the field and 35% from 3-point range across 19.5 minutes per night. Not exactly game changing numbers. The only reason you would consider making this move is if you don’t have confidence in Payton Pritchard. I’d argue that Pritchard has shown enough flashes and deserves to play.
ORRRRRR maybe you need another point guard if you trade Malcolm Brogdon!?!!? Can we please make that happen? The guy is apparently miserable the Celtics tried to dump him. Can we have Buddy Hield, please?
