Arsenal has made an opening proposal for Chelsea’s Kai Havertz.
The Premier League runner-up’s interest in Havertz is relatively new. According to The Athletic, however, Arsenal’s interest is serious and they will now begin attempting to recruit the 24-year-old German to the club.
Havertz moved to Chelsea three years ago on a £70 million deal. He has since made 139 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals and creating 15 assists.
This season, he primarily played as a striker for the Blues. In 47 total appearances, he scored nine goals.
Despite having a somewhat difficult season for Chelsea, the club is still interested in extending Havertz’s stay. This will prove challenging, however, due to the interest in his services.
Besides Arsenal, Bayern Münich has also expressed interest in trying to purchase Havertz this summer.
His former manager, Thomas Tuchel, is Bayern’s manager and is interested in having Havertz back under his wing.
With only two years left on Havertz’s contract, Chelsea is now in a somewhat precarious situation. If he decides he does not want to renew his contract with the club, they may look to sell him if the right deal is offered to them.
Chelsea needs to sell players this summer not only to offset their previous transfer spending but to also fund new transfers as the club looks to rebuild ahead of next season. If they are to receive a reasonable offer for the German international, then the club would likely be open to selling him.
The benefit of purchasing Havertz for Arsenal is that he can play in multiple attacking positions. He could play as an attacking midfielder, a winger or as an alternative to Gabriel Jesus up top.
Arsenal’s current focus is on securing Declan Rice‘s transfer from West Ham. However, Arteta’s interest in Havertz shows Arsenal’s willingness to spend in order to increase their depth ahead of next season.
If they are able to reach an agreement with Chelsea over Havertz’s price, it is a realistic possibility that he will be a Gunner next season.
