Arizona Cardinals Release Zach Ertz
The Arizona Cardinals have granted Zach Ertz‘s request to be released, NFL All-Pro J.J. Watt was the first to report the news Thursday.
Ertz, 33, requested a release with the hopes of joining a Super Bowl contender. He will need to clear waivers to become a free agent.
A quad injury forced Ertz onto Injured Reserve and has kept him sidelined for the last five games. In his time on the sideline, second-year tight end Trey McBride has produced, which likely played into the Cardinals’ willingness to let Ertz walk.
In seven games, Ertz has recorded 27 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown. It was not the most productive start to the season, but that can be attributed to the Cardinals’ early season offensive struggles.
Ertz has taken a step back from his prime form. Still, he could be useful to a contender looking to add depth to its tight end room. It is also helpful that Ertz is in line for a short and cheap deal.
The most obvious landing spot for Ertz is the Philadephia Eagles. Ertz spent nine years in Philadephia and was a part of the 2017 team that won the Super Bowl. With starting tight end Dallas Goedert dealing with an arm injury, Ertz would be a solid insurance option. The Eagles made a similar move adding Julio Jones. It would not be an unprecedented move to bring in Ertz.
As for the Cardinals, at 2-10, the team is not close to playoff contention. This move allows them to prepare McBride for a full-time starting role. At the same time, it will open up cap space for the upcoming offseason.
