Are the Chicago Cubs Completely Doomed After This Season?

The Chicago Cubs have had a rough 2021 season. At the trade deadline, they dealt away their entire core. Chicago traded Anthony Rizzo the New York Yankees. Kris Bryant went to the San Francisco Giants. Javy Baez was dealt to the New York Mets. Craig Kimbrel left for the cross-town Chicago White Sox. I wrote before the deadline that all these players would probably be gone, urging SimBull investors to sell off their SimCubs stock. The Cubs have slipped to fourth place in the NL Central, over 20 games behind the division lead.

The Chicago Cubs’ Future

The future doesn’t look very promising for the Chicago Cubs. While I’m not high on their overall outlook, they have some nice prospects in the system. Outfielder Brennen Davis, their top prospect, has looked really good in the minors. I think he has a really good shot to be a stud. Christian Hernandez is a 17-year-old infielder in rookie ball who I also like, but he has a few years left before he hits the Show, if ever. Chicago’s farm system is notoriously bad at developing pitching, but Brailyn Marquez and Jordan Wicks could buck that trend. In their deadline deals, Chicago also picked up infieler Nick Madrigal, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 Draft. They are likely looking at him to be their second baseman of the future.

While the Cubs have some solid talents in their farm system and have certainly improved their system at the deadline, I don’t know that it’s good enough to where a bright future is a certainty. There will more likely than not be quite a few seasons of misery for Cubs fans before they turn things around.
