Anthony Rendon reveals baseball has ‘never been a top priority for me’

The downfall of Anthony Rendon is something that will be talked about for years to come. The guy was receiving MVP votes and was once considered one of the best third basemen in the league. Only for him to sign a huge contract with the Angels and then immediately become one of the worst players in the MLB.

But perhaps this fall from grace isn’t so surprising. At least once, you hear Anthony Rendon talk about just how much of a priority baseball is in his life.

“It’s never been a top priority for me, This is a job. I do this to make a living. My faith, my family come first before this job. So if those things come before it, I’m leaving.”

Obviously, nobody is saying you need to disregard your family in pursuit of your career completely. That would be lunacy and just a stupid life choice.

But to come out and say it’s not a top priority at all just seems a little crazy to me. Sure it’s technically a job, one that pays you more money you could spend in a lifetime. But is there really just no desire left in Rendon to actually care?

Jiarmani did a great piece earlier this year on the comments Rendon made to shorten the season. Which had his former teammate Jonathan Papelbon come out and say Rendon straight-up hates baseball.

Clear the guy just has no heart or desire to ever take baseball seriously again. He really should follow Jiarmani’s advice and just leave baseball. Seems like he would be happier.

Even dating back to his days in Washington, Rendon has dealt with injuries. But things really seemed to turn for the worse once he got to Anehiem.

He’s dealt with injuries to the groin, wrist, and shins, only playing in 200 games over the last four seasons. In which he posted an OPS over 800 once during the 2020 shortened season. But last year was by far the worst. Playing in only 43 games with a .236 average and .678 OPS.

Plenty of athletes deal with injuries though, it sort of just comes with the job. It seems like a decently fair trade-off for the amount of money you’ll get, but I digress. At the end of the day, you gotta have that fire to wanna come back better and overcome the injuries.

In a sense, you gotta have that dawg in you, and Anthony Rendon just does not have that. Which has turned Rendon into an enemy of sorts in the eyes of Angels fans. Which Rendon did also speak on.

“They don’t know me. They only know the surface area there, They’re a fan, right? They might know that I’m 6 feet tall and 190 pounds, but they don’t know who I am as an individual.”

Quote Via the Score

Sure maybe people don’t know who you are a person, who cares. But it’s clear there is just no passion within the heart of Anthony Rendon and I don’t see things getting better for him. He already has a huge contract and has the ring. So he quite literally has nothing to play for anymore, he’s just gonna milk this contract out and ride off into the sunset.

He completely finessed the Angels organization and ruined any chance they had at ever making a serious run. Granted, Rendon is far from the only issue within the Angels organization. But he certainly has made no effort to make things any better.

Maybe he decides to have a change of heart and actually care about baseball again. But until that happens, we can say goodbye to the baseball player that once was Anthony Rendon.
