Anthony Edwards Speaks Out Against Load Management

Timberwolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards spoke out against load management at the All-Star game.

Too often in today’s NBA, load management rears its ugly head. For those who don’t know, load management is when a player sits out, usually a star player, to try and get the player “100% healthy” if the game being played isn’t as important as other matchups.

The 2020 NBA Draft’s first overall pick had this to say about the NBA’s controversial resting method:

“If there’s anything I could change about the league to make it better… probably just all the guys sitting and resting. That’s the only thing I probably don’t like. Just play man,” Edwards said to reporters at All-Star Game Media Day on Sunday in Salt Lake City.

“I don’t like all the sitting and missing games and stuff like, these people might have enough money to come to one game. That might be the game they come to you sitting out. I take pride in trying to play every game because I don’t know, it might be one fan that’s never seen me play.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Edwards is spot on here. If you really care about the people who watch come to watch you play, why wouldn’t you want to put yourself on the floor every opportunity you can?

Edwards’s track record sticks to his statement. The 21-year-old guard has played in every single Timberwolves game this season and leads the NBA with 2,211 minutes played.

Load Management Around The League

NBA fans could easily recognize some of the biggest load management offenders in recent memory. The first name that comes to my mind is Kawhi Leonard. A lot of players tend to miss games on the second night of back-to-back doubleheaders, which even strengthens the argument against the method.

People around the NBA, executives, and even commissioner Adam Silver, recognize that load management is a problem.

“I don’t have a good answer for that other than this is a deep league with incredible competition,” Silver said to the media in Salt Lake City.

So, if even the commissioner doesn’t know what to do about load management. What’s your solution to the problem?
