Andrew Wiggins Has Vaccine Exemption Denied By NBA

The NBA has announced that they have denied Golden State Warriors Forward Andrew Wiggins’ request for a vaccination exemption. This means that Wiggins will be ineligible to play any games at home in San Francisco until he meets the city’s vaccination requirement. This ruling was announced Friday, just a few hours after the New York Knicks said their entire roster is vaccinated, meaning their entire team can play at home this upcoming 2021-2022 NBA season.

Because of local coronavirus regulations in both New York and in San Francisco, the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and Golden State Warriors are required to be vaccinated to play in their home arenas unless they have an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Andrew Wiggins looked to get an exemption for religious reasons.

Full quote via ESPN.com:

“The NBA has reviewed and denied Andrew Wiggins’ request for religious exemption from the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s order requiring COVID-19 vaccination for all participants age 12 and older at large indoor events,” the league said in a statement. “Wiggins will not be able to play in Warriors home games until he fulfills the city’s vaccination requirements.”

The San Francisco Department of Public Health released a statement earlier Friday that there would be no exemption for anyone over the age of 12 at large indoor gatherings.

“Under the current order, if unvaccinated, they cannot enter indoor areas regardless of the reason they are unvaccinated and cannot test out of this requirement even if they have a medical or religious exemption,” it said in a statement.

About 85% of players at the end of last season reported having the vaccine, and that number would look to go up this season, especially in part to cities around the US putting in place these vaccine requirements. No matter your stance on the vaccine, from the sounds of it Andrew Wiggins has some tough decisions to make and needs to make them fast.
