Andre Drummond can hit free agency if he decides to opt-out of a $28.75 million player option. Drummond is having a really productive season in Detroit. The Pistons center is averaging 21.2 points, 18 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game. The center position may be a dying one, but Drummond is doing his part to be one of the game’s best. Regardless of whether Drummond opts in or out, he wants to be part of the Pistons.
The Detroit rim protector said this to Rod Beard of the Detroit News:
“At the end of the day, I can’t control what the front office wants to do in terms of the contract stuff. The only thing I can control right now is playing the game the right way and putting my team in a good position to win. Whatever happens after that happens,” Drummond told The News. “Obviously, I would enjoy playing for the rest of my career in Detroit. Whatever happens at the end of the year happens and we’ll figure it out when that time comes.”
I really wonder if Drummond will get more. The upcoming summer doesn’t feature a ton of great free agent options. Believe it or not, Drummond is one of the best ones. Still, the former UConn center is an old school center. Back to the basket, clog the lane, and rebound. Is a team going to pay the max for that?
At the end of the day, what are the Pistons really doing? This team has no ceiling if Drummond is their best player. It’s also a bad fit with Blake Griffin on the same roster. They don’t fit the modern NBA. Good luck winning 40 games a year and being irrelevant.
