Amanda Nunes Announces Retirement After Win At UFC 289

After a dominating performance against Irene Aldana at UFC 289, Amanda Nunes shocked the world and announced she would be retiring from the sport of mixed martial arts. The undisputed greatest female fighter of all time laid her gloves on the mat during her post-fight interview, which is a common signal to fight fans that the fighter is walking away from the sport.

Widely regarded as not only the greatest female fighter of all time but in some circles, including this writer, she is the pound-for-pound greatest, male or female. Since entering the UFC way back in 2013, she held a record of 16-2, winning both the Bantamweight and Featherweight titles simultaneously. She has wins over the lines of Valentina Shevchenko (x2), Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Holly Holm, and Julianna Pena with more not mentioned.

With Amanda Nunes retiring at UFC 289, this leaves A LOT of questions on the table. What does Dana White do with the Featherweight division? If he keeps it, who is next in line? Who are the two ladies next up for the Bantamweight championship? Could Nunes find her way into the coaching world as well? I have no doubts if she tried her hand at coaching, she could be one of the very best in the world very quickly, similar to the path that Khabib Nurmagomedov started on after he retired.

I speak on behalf of the staff here at Vendetta and fight fans around the globe in saying thank you Amanda Nunes for an incredible career and putting on show-stopping performances. Nunes will undoubtedly be in the UFC Hall of Fame soon, and rightfully so. Now, we wait and see who can fill the gain hole left by Nunes in women’s MMA.
