Alexander Volkanovski wants Islam Makhachev rematch

Alexander Volkanovski was unable to complete his goal of becoming a UFC double champion at UFC 284, losing a close decision against Islam Makhachev. Although, he does not agree with how the judges scored the fight and wants to share the cage with Makhachev again.

Volkanovski has a legitimate gripe. The scoring of the fight has been debated since the second it ended. It is obvious that Volkanovski won rounds three and five, while Makhachev walked away with one and four. That leaves round two, which was a 50-50 round. It would be fair to give it to either fighter. This fight was not a robbery by any means, and it is easy to see why Volkanovski thinks he won.

Still, saying the fight was close does not help ease the pain that comes with a loss in a UFC title fight. Instead, Volkanovski wants another crack at Makhachev to alleviate that pain.

Makhachev gave his opinion on the situation as well, but he tossed in a little bit of sarcasm.

Clearly, Volkanovski won more than just the last minute. Makhachev does not need to be the one to admit that, though.

After Yair Rodriguez was able to win the UFC interim featherweight title with an impressive win over Josh Emmett, Volkanovski already has his next featherweight title defense lined up. Despite the potential of a rematch between Volkanovski and Makhachev, the featherweight division cannot be ignored. That is especially true since a title contender has an interesting title contender has emerged.

Once Volkanovski fights Rodriguez we can re-evaluate the situation and determine what is next. That should help add some clarity in the lightweight division too. After all, there is no reason to rush another super fight between Volkanovski and Makhachev. That fight can happen when the right time comes around. That right time is not right now. It may be time soon though.
