UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin compares Super League supporters to flat-earthers
As the push for a European Super League continues from some of Europe’s biggest clubs UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has come out and compared the teams involved to flat-earthers.
“In the same way that the earth is flat, they still think the Super League exists. At the same time, they were the first to sign up to play in the Champions League this season,” Ceferin said in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche.
Amongst the clubs that Ceferin has targeted are Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus. This does not come as a shock as it was the Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, who proposed and headed the idea of a Super League.
Back in April of 2021, Perez announced the idea of a new tournament that involved 12 of the biggest teams in Europe as an alternative to the current UEFA Champions League that goes on. Of the 12 teams involved six came from England, three from Spain, and three from Italy.
Following the proposal, there was massive backlash taken by fans and players alike against the teams involved. Protests were being held and in one case fans of Manchester United broke into their stadium Old Trafford to protest during a match that was held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
All but three of the teams involved quickly backed out from the proposed Super League. The only ones that remained were Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus. With Perez and Real Madrid being the only one that has stayed very vocal about the need for a European Super League.
The idea of a Super League continues to be pushed partially due to the large amount of money that each team involved would be making. The only other positive that really can be found from this idea is that the fans would see the best teams play each other, but that is already happening in the UEFA Champions League.
In January, UEFA attempted to get a judge who gave an injunction to shield the Super League removed from the case, but a court in Madrid denied that bid.
This idea is going on at the same time that FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposes that the World Cup that has always been played every four years be switched to being held every two years instead. This too has had a lot of backlash especially from players who are worried about their well-being.
Changes have already been made to the World Cup with the expansion of the 2026 tournament in Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. from 32 teams to 48 teams. By adding 16 teams the tournament will go from 64 matches being played to 80 matches. This will take a toll on players and has the potential to cause the level of play to drop.
It really is only a matter of time until the European Super League is no longer a tournament just thought about as money does speak louder than words. However, Aleksander Ceferin will do all he can to prevent this from happening.
