In a move that is likely a year overdue, but Kalen DeBoer is bringing along his former Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb to Alabama, per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. Grubb accepted a position last off-season with the Seattle Seahawks for their offensive coordinator position. He worked under DeBoer with Washington the two years prior, in 2022 and 2023, and at Fresno State from 2020 and 2021.
I’m not sure if he is the main cause for the success of the Washington success during its rise in the prior two years. Kalen DeBoer received a lot of the credit for the development of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. We expected to see some of this talent translate to the Seattle Seahawks this prior season, and while the team was successful on the season under first-year head coach Mike MacDonald, I don’t think we saw all the potential we were expecting, so a return to college with DeBoer could be huge for him. Now that Jalen Milroe is gone, we shall see who this duo decides to run out as their starter in 2025.
Ryan Grubb heading back to college, to Alabama nonetheless, could be huge for the program. Alabama finished 9-4 last season, ending the year with a loss to Michigan in their bowl game. After the retirement of Nick Saban, we knew there would be a bit of a “fall-off” with the Crimson Tide, but I believe this is still a more than promising program. With the addition of Grubb, this offense should look much smoother in 2025. Just need to wait and see who will be leading this offense on the field.
