RIP Woj Bombs. The GOAT in terms of news breakers called it quits from the industry in order to pursue a new gig at his alma mater. Adrian Wojnarowski is now the GM of basketball over at St. Bonaventure. The announcement really came out of nowhere and that’s exactly how Woj wanted it.
It turns out that his biggest fear would have been someone else breaking the story on his own retirement. Which is fair given the crux of the industry he was in with ESPN.
As his competition with former protégé Shams Charania ramped up, a guarded Wojnarowski increasingly played his cards close to the vest, say sources. So it didn’t come as a surprise to Woj-watchers he chose to detonate the last “Woj bomb” himself.
As one source told me: “Woj’s worst nightmare would have been Shams breaking the news of his retirement.”
Maybe this is crazy, but I understand why he feels the way he did on that. What does Woj owe ESPN after they suspended him years ago? Also, you know the second word got back to ESPN, this would have been leaked like it always does. Whoever broke that story, likely Shams, would have had bragging rights forever.
It remains to be seen who ESPN will hire to replace Woj.
It also remains to be seen if Woj can actually help St. Bonaventure become a better basketball program.
Comment if you have a take on either.
