Aaron Rodgers Explains Why He Took The $35 Million Pay Cut
Talk about a slap in the face to Green Bay. Can anyone remember a time when an athlete willingly took a $35 million pay cut? Maybe Bob Iger should take a pay cut so ESPN can stop firing people!
What made Rodgers want to take this kind of discount? Well, he talked about it during a recent interview.
“What it comes down to it was … it was the right thing that made me feel best,” Rodgers said, in quotes contained in King’s Football Morning in America column.
“I thought it was important they knew how committed I was,” Rodgers told King. “And in my conversations with [G.M.] Joe [Douglas], he has made it very clear the vision for the football team.”
“Big names move at the trade deadline now,” Rodgers said. “I wanted to make sure that if somebody valuable came available that we’d be able to get him.”
The karma gods are really happy with Rodgers right now. Can you imagine if this pay cut leads to the Jets signing Dalvin Cook? If not Cook, this move still saved the Jets a ton of money. That’s going to make a difference in the long run and will help the Jets continue to add to this roster.
I think this helps Rodgers’ legacy too. You take this kind of discount because your intentions are to win. This is the kind of thing that Tom Brady did for years. The Jets still don’t feel like Super Bowl contenders but it can’t be understated what this type of discount does for the cap situation in New York.
