Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will be moving to Arsenal on a permanent deal, as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. The deal is worth £24 million, with a possible £6 million in add-ons if he becomes the No. 1 goalkeeper for the Gunners, according to The Athletic. Ramsdale will be competing with first choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno for starting minutes this season. With Leno’s contract due to expire in 2023, it appears that this move was made for the future rather than present.
According to a press release from Arsenal, Ramsdale will be given the No. 32 shirt and pending a regulatory transfer review, should be available for Sunday’s North West London derby against Chelsea. The 23-year-old was one of three goalkeepers on the roster during England’s 2020(1) Euro final run.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta responded yesterday to online abuse the now former Sheffield keeper received regarding his impending arrival with the Gunners. Arteta had this to say in support of his new goalkeeper:
“I think they’re going to love his personality, his character, the quality that he has as a goalkeeper and what he’s going to offer.”
VIA Metro News
“I think give him some time, he’s a young goalkeeper as well but with a huge, huge potential.”
VIA Metro News
Ramsdale started all 38 Premier League matches for Sheffield United last season, conceding 63 goals and keeping five clean sheets. That stark goal differential had more to do with the quality of opponents and the Sheffield backline. He did record 147 saves. Sheffield United were relegated at the end of the 2020-21 EPL season.
With the summer window closing on August 31, Arsenal have made the most of this transfer window. The Gunners spent upwards of £100 million on new signings Ben White, Nuno Tavares, Martin Ødegaard and now Ramsdale. The front office has given Arteta some great young talent, now it’s time for the manager to deliver the club European football.
