With Aaron Judge, Do The Dodgers Slide Betts To Second?

After another comical collapse for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, they want to show that won’t affect them moving forward. A team blessed with superstars up and down like Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, what’s one more to them? They’ve been invested in the Aaron Judge sweepstakes.

Adding free agent superstar outfielder may ensure the Dodgers win 120 games this season. For the Yankees, he literally broke the American League home run record, with 63.

With the Dodgers dealing with a lot of their players entering free agency themselves, they’re going to have to ponder who to re-sign or to go after. As a result, Mookie Betts may be playing second base for the Dodgers if they indeed sign Judge for 2023.

Betts has experience at the position playing there, especially during times when he was battling minor injuries. His career fielding percentage at second is a respectable .972, which would perhaps get even better if he focuses primarily on that position.

The Dodgers will have a major shakeup this offseason, especially if they don’t re-sign shortstop Trea Turner which is more than likely. If this is the case, they’d move Gavin Lux to shortstop with the second base hole occupied by Mookie.

There’s no reason to stick Betts in the Designated Hitter role, especially with his range at practically any position. That role will perhaps go towards Max Muncy, as I also don’t expect the Dodgers to re-sign Justin Turner. Third base will be occupied by rookie Miguel Vargas.

Signing Aaron Judge to the team would add to this juggernaut. There is cause for concern though. Both Betts’ and Judge’s bats went ice-cold in the 2022 postseason. Betts slashed .143/.278/.214 while Judge hit .139/.184/.306.

Sure, these sample sizes are small, but if the Dodgers want to get out of their almost yearly Postseason rut, they need players who will show up when it matters. Would the chemistry work out with these two superstars? It’s a question to ponder.
